Veteran police chief Eli Gallagher doesn't ask for much, but he does insist that his officers uphold the "serve" part of "serve and protect". Conscientious young Deputy Stan Leach takes Eli's moto to heart, maintaining a high standard of personal accountability.

When Eli's long-distance boyfriend, Gilbert Nees, telephones from Philadelphia, Eli thinks he intends to further cement their relationship. Unfortunately, Gilbert's news is anything but good. But Eli doesn't have time to wallow, because a violent act results in murder in the small town of Morristown, Mississippi.

But as Eli and Stan uncover evidence, their personal lives begin to unravel. Stan, working closely with Chief Gallagher, grows increasingly attached to Eli and learns what it really means to be an advocate of justice.

*****SPOILERS AHEAD*****

The blurb for this story is very misleading. The MCs spent most of the story with other people and there was no mention of the MCs having any sort of attraction to each other until almost the end of the story. Eli's boyfriend doesn't call to tell him that he's getting married to a woman like the book's description mentions; instead, he goes to where his boyfriend lives and spends the first half of the story beating a dead horse, so to speak, trying to save a relationship that he had already decided that he didn't want to be in anymore. The murder that was mentioned in the story's description didn't occur until near the end of the story and it was not much of a story line since they knew who the killer was and he seemed to be apprehended fairly quickly. The main characters finally got together at the 82% mark but by then it seemed anticlimactic. The writing was very good and I wanted to like this story more than I actually did

The Winter Dark (Audible Audio Edition) JS Cook KC Kelly Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

The story itself was unusual in that the romance element between the two main characters doesn't really occur until near the end. For two-thirds of the story they are both with other men and those relationships seem to fizzle out with no further mention of them. Although enjoyable plot points in themselves, they had little bearing on the rest of the story and these characters didn’t reappear. I think their main purpose was to indicate how lonely Stan and Eli were and to show aspects of their backgrounds and personalities.

Apart from a scene near the beginning, Stan and Eli have hardly any time together until the last quarter of the story. They investigate a domestic abuse case, deal with a grisly crime scene and autopsy together, which in turn brings them together sexually and felt a little contrived. Eli declares to Stan not to tell anyone about their hooking up just before they make out, which came across as anything but romantic. I noticed several character inconsistencies and points that didn’t quite make sense. The blurb didn’t really match the plot. There was no real mystery to solve as they knew who the murderer was and he was apprehended easily.

It felt like a chunk of the book had been cut out because there seemed to be little interaction here compared to the detailed events of earlier in the story with their previous partners. There was no real chemistry between Stan and Eli, with only one or two references to finding the other person physically attractive dotted here and there. The epilogue and HEA seemed to come out of the blue without enough time for the reader to see a development in their relationship once it started.

Having said all this, the writing and the events of the story themselves were enjoyable. It was the main romance plot that was a little 'wishy-washy' and needed far more substance and page space.

NARRATION

I chose this audiobook without really reading the blurb purely because I'm a fan of K.C. Kelly's voice and his narration and, as always, he did an excellent job. He paces the story well and portrays emotions and dialogue superbly, although I thought Stan didn’t quite come across as young enough for a twenty-eight-year old.
A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review (An Ali Audiobook Review)
Rating 2.5 out of 5 stars
The horrific murder of a local woman rocks Morristown, Mississipi. With her death, veteran police chief Eli Gallagher feels he’s failed his small town, despite trying his best to serve and protect everyone in his jurisdiction. Sometimes that’s harder than it looks, given that rich and poor don’t always get along, and life on the other side of the tracks can turn deadly.

By his side is conscientious young Deputy Stan Leach. Together they work to discover the killer. But as they uncover evidence, their personal lives begin to unravel. Eli’s long-distance boyfriend telephones saying he’s getting married to a woman. Stan learns that the man he helped shelter wants to move on. When the clues unveil a history of abuse, the two men pull together to bring the murdered woman justice and maybe find the answers to theother questions in their lives.
This is a novella by a new to me author. The story was just ok for me. The majority of the story is about the two main characters in relationships with other people. We see those relationships and eventually why those don’t work out. They end up working a horrible murder case together and take comfort in each other. All of a sudden they are a couple and it is the end of the book. We get an epilogue which shows their happily ever after but I felt cheated. I felt like the book was about the other relationships and we didn’t get to see any of this relationship develop. The ending was very abrupt in my opinion and honestly I wasn’t too happy with the way it all played out.
The book was narrated by K.C Kelly and I felt like he did a nice job. He had a nice voice and I was always able to tell which character was talking.
Although the narration was solid and I liked that aspect, I didn’t really enjoy the story as a whole.
Cover I like the cover and felt it was well done. It’s an attractive cover that catches your eye. It’s also a nice representation of the story.
j s cook is so much better than this. Her historic m/m stories are atmospheric, adventurous, fun, romantic. I don't know what went tilt with this one, but try anything else written by her in the last few years.
Note-perfect Southern story (to the ear of this Yankee with eight years logged in Georgia and Virginia). Short but sweet; very accomplished writing. Intend to read everything else Cook has written.
